Podcasts are something that I can’t live without. When I was living in Downtown Toronto last year, and I was unable read books on my walk to work, I found podcasts. They kept my mind engaged, made me laugh, frustrated me, and taught me a whole lot. I learned a lot more about having some very uncomfortable conversations from podcasts. Being that they play such a huge part in my life, I’m bringing you my list of the Ten Podcasts to Start Listening to Immediately.
Are you listening to The Read? If you’re not, you should be. This is my all-time favourite podcast. A new episode is released every Thursday and I anxiously await the notification on my phone letting me know a new episode is available for me. Hosted by Crissle and Kid Fury, this podcast that covers hip-hop and pop culture’s most ridiculous celebrities. OMG, is this one ever amazing. Always truthful, hilarious, and completely no b.s. is what you get with The Read. While it may not be everyone’s cup of tea, it gives me life each and every week. I can’t wait until they are here live in Toronto. You know I already got my ticket.
This is a true crime podcast with a comedic twist. I know what you are thinking, how can true crime be funny? Well, it’s not really the crimes themselves that are funny, its more the thought process, comments, and side rants that hosts Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark go on when they are re-telling their selected crime/murder case each week. Probably the first podcast I started listening to. I don’t always catch them every week, but I do tend to binge on them when I’m working around the house.
Now this one is an investigative journalist podcast that is hosted by Brian Reed and produced by the same producers of Serial and This American Life. Needless to say that this one is a lot more polished than a lot of others. The entire seven episodes in the S-Town podcast was released back on March 28, 2017. It starts with a very outlandish conspiracy theory that quickly unravels. While you may start this one just to hear the theory that started it all, you will stay to hear more about John B. McLemore and just why he calls his home town S-Town. It is an absolutely fascinating podcast that was downloaded 10 million times in 4 days.
For anyone who love’s hip hop and is interested in learning about the man who worked with some of the biggest names in hip hop. Chris Lighty was an American music industry executive. But he wasn’t the typical guy in the suit. This podcast chronicles his rise and fall before his disputed suicide back in August 2012. Hosted by Reggie Ossé, aka Combat Jack, Mogul is not only a fascinating look at the life of a hip hop legend, but it includes some cameos and a some insightful stories from some of hip hop’s legends. Sadly the host Reggie Ossé lost his life earlier this year after a battle with colon cancer.
Now this podcast has to be the least PC one on my list. Hosted by Charlamagne Tha God andAndrew Schulz, it’s a weekly take on some of the hottest topics around. While they may not always express their opinions in the most mature of ways, they are always willing to listen, discuss and have those difficult conversations that many shy away from. Sometimes I’m offended, sometimes I’m in agreement, but I always laugh and I always walk away with something new to think about.
LEVAR BURTON READS. Do I really need to say more? Well in case I do, this is hands down one of the best podcasts around. From the man who brought you Reading Rainbow, which was a large part of my childhood, comes a podcast where he reads chapters of various books. I love it because its Levar Burton and it takes me right back to my childhood listening to him read anything. But it’s also a gem because the books he is reading are not necessarily books that were on my to be read list. So I always get some new reads after listening to this one.
This is the funniest podcast around. I can only listen to it in very small doses and only in the comfort of my own home because I end up laughing so hard I cry. This podcast is a re-reading of a Porno one of the hosts father wrote called ‘Belinda Blinked’. It is such a bad porno that it makes Fifty Shades of Grey look like the height of sophisticated literature. It’s so bad it’s good.
This one was a recommendation from the lovely ladies from My Favorite Murder. It basically discusses various mysterious topics each week. I just started this one, but so far I’m finding it very interesting.
If you don’t know who Larry Wilmore is, you’ve probably been living under a rock somewhere. He is an Emmy Award Winning producer, actor and comedian. This podcast is “where he weighs in on the issues of the week and interviews guests in the worlds of politics, entertainment, culture, sports, and beyond”. His take on the issues is both hilarious and insightful and I for one make sure to tune in each and every episode.
Revisionist History is probably the most interesting podcast on my list. Each week, the podcast goes back and reinterprets something from the past and examines it with the benefit of time and knowledge. This podcast is released like a television show and currently has two seasons with 10 episodes each.
So there you have my list Ten Podcasts to Start Listening to Immediately. What about you, do you have any podcasts that you absolutely have to listen to each week? Leave a comment and let me know!
