Is it possible for me just to say that Suicide Squad is just an awful movie and leave it at that? Honestly, this is 2 hours and 3 minutes of my life that I will never get back and it’s kind of pissing me off. Here’s the thing, I get that D.C. is trying to compete with Marvel. But while I am not a big enough comic fan to really get into the whole D.C. vs. Marvel debate, I will say that D.C. is not doing a very good job of competing or coming anywhere close to even catching up to the Marvel movies. I don’t know how but D.C. just keeps managing to get it all wrong, and Suicide Squad is no different. Casting, writing, direction and so on were just so wrong on this one it’s not even funny.
I should have known better, because a movie that features Will Smith as your anti-hero lead is bound to be crappy. Seriously, he is not believable as either a tough guy or a bad guy, at least not in Suicide Squad he isn’t. While I known that Jai Courtney is Ausrtalian and his accent in the movie is genuine, it was also indecipherable. Viola Davis is usually so good in the roles she plays, but she was just so wooden in this one that it just came off as trying way too hard. The bright spot of the whole movie were Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and Jared Leto as The Joker. Both of them were great on their own and when they were then in a scene together, it was just that much better. For those of you who were excited about seeing Jared Leto’s take on the joker, he is in like a good 10-20 minutes of the entire movie which is really such a waste because he can act the hell out of any role.
The special effects were very good, which is to be expected. The sad part is that the plot is just so lacking in pretty much everything that all the awesome special effects can’t pull this one off. There is no character development or depth to be found in Suicide Squad or any of the D.C. movies and that is something they are going to have to rectify if they ever hope to actually compete with Marvel.
