JOICO Defy Damage Hair Care Line

JOICO Defy Damage Hair Care Line

Happy Friday from rainy Toronto.  While I normally like rain, I am not impressed today because I just washed my hair.  Why can’t the weather just work with me for once?  In any case, today we are taking a look at the new *JOICO Defy Damage Hair Care Line.  Released back in March, this range of at-home salon quality products are designed to provide healthier hair with 80% less breakage, 5 times stronger hair, and 90% maintenance of colour vibrancy.  It also promises immediate softness and shine after just one use.  Sounds like something we all want when it comes to hair care.

Now I’ll admit that while I like all of what the JOICO Defy Damage Hair Care Line claims to do for your hair, I’m also a natural born skeptic.  So when these products landed on my doorstep, I was excited to try them but giving them the side eye at the same time.  I’m a WOC, who wears my hair natural and has a lot of it.  So I’m pretty picky about the products I use in my hair.  I’ve long given up on the traditional drugstore brands or brands that are not specifically designed for WOC.  Still, I was anxious to try this line out and put it to the test.  Of course, then I broke my wrist and trying out the products with any kind of urgency went right out the window.

Fast forward six weeks and I was finally able to get down to business.  Included in the at-home JOICO Defy Damage Hair Care Line, you have the following products:

  • Defy Damage Protective Shampoo ($24.95/300 ml)
  • Defy Damage Protective Conditioner ($25.5/250 ml)
  • Defy Damage Protective Masque ($27.65/150 ml)
  • Defy Damage Protective Shield ($27.65/100 ml)

The entire line is designed for bond-strengthening and colour longevity.  I was a bit disappointed in the sizes of the products themselves and that alone would normally put me off purchasing them myself.  As I mentioned before, I have a lot of hair and it tends to just soak products right in so I tend to have to use a lot of it.  As a result, I don’t usually purchase anything that contains less than 400 ml of a product; especially when it comes to shampoo and conditioner.  But here’s the thing, with the JOICO Defy Damage Hair Care Line, a little of this stuff goes a long, long way.

It’s insane just how good the JOICO Defy Damage Hair Care Line really is.  Not only did I have to use way less product than I normally have to use with any other hair care line, but I could literally feel my hair transforming with each step in the routine.  I started off with the shampoo, which lathered really nicely and left my hair feeling really clean but without feeling stripped.  The conditioner allowed me to detangle my hair so easily.  This is no easy feat as detangling my very curly natural hair normally needs to be done as its own step before shampooing.  With each product I used in the routine, my hair just got smoother and smoother.  I could literally feel the difference in the texture as I went along.  The best part is that my hair didn’t feel weighed down at all.

Hair masks are my new favourite thing, and the JOICO Defy Damage Hair Care Line has one as well.  The shampoo and conditioner put my hair in such a good position, that by the time I got to the hair mask, I used a minuscule amount.  Certainly less than I’ve used with any other hair mask I’ve tried to date.  I would say that I have another three to four uses left in this.  Considering that I only wash my hair once, maybe twice a week, this will last me a while.  The Protective Shield is just a fancy name for a leave-in conditioner.  I always, always use a leave-in for my hair.  It’s part of how I am able to get my wash and go’s to last so long with minimal refreshing or protective styling needed.  Not all leave-in’s are created equal, and that is just as true with this one.  It was good, very good.  I not only found myself having to use less of this leave-in when compared to others, but I also ended up using less of the rest of the products (gel, oil, cream, etc.) to style my hair.

All in all, I quite like the JOICO Defy Damage Hair Care Line and I can see myself repurchasing it when it runs out.  Only time will tell if it does all it claims to, but I can certainly say that I’m willing to stick with this routine to find out.
